daffodil 1st day of spring (march 21st) / st david's day 1st march





materials
(for a standard size daffodil )
double knitting wool in shades of yellows/oranges + green for stem






set of 4 double pointed (sock) needles for trumpets (knitted in the round)
size 4mm ( 8uk  / 6us )

set of 2  4mm needles for petals (worked flat)

green plastic covered bendy garden wire for stem
pipe cleaners for stamens (optional)
tapestry needle to finish


choice of 2 different shapes of trumpet
long & narrow OR short & flared
sewn around 7 sepals
sewn to top of a green stem
& 6 separate petals sewn round

using green wool and 2 DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES
all knit stitches
all worked on the front  ( i-cord)

cast on 5 stitches
k5 slide to other end of needle
WITHOUT TURNING WORK and pulling wool tight
k5 slide to other end of needle ...

continue until 12inches (30cm) long

stamens / anther

anther & stamens (make 7 in total)

 

 

cut half a pipe cleaner
wrap wool around centre 1"
fold in half  wrap wool around whole length
tie off

use 1 as anther
arrange 6 stamens around so that they are slightly shorter
tie together
fit inside funnel

attach to top of stem

sew 3 petals around
sew other 3 petals around these overlapping joins
