4mm (uk8) double ended needles
and
double knitting wool (much less than 50g ball)
cast on 8 stitches
k1 increase 1 4times 12 sts
k2 increase 1 4times 16 sts
k3 increase 1 4times 20 sts
k4 increase 1 4times 24 sts
knit 2 rows
k till 3 stitches remain wrap & turn
p till 3 stitches remain wrap & turn
knit 1 row
k till 3 stitches remain wrap & turn
p till 3 stitches remain wrap & turn
knit 1 row
k3 k2tog k till 5 sts remain k2tog tbl k3 22sts
k3 k2tog k till 5 sts remain k2tog tbl k3 20sts
k3 k2tog k till 5 sts remain k2tog tbl k3 18sts
knit 1 row
k3 up1 k till 5 sts remain up 1 k3 20sts

if you'd rather work on 2 needles & sew up
work every other row as a purl row
(neater, but not necessary, to work the k/k2tog stuff in reverse order ie row 2 would be "increase1 p2" instead of "p2 increase 1" )
