long stem rose (rose for shanti version 1)

materials
rose
50g red double knitting wool
green double knitting wool
size 4mm (uk8/us6) knitting needles
darning/tapestry needle to sew up

pipe cleaners for stem and leaves

can all be knitted flat on 2 needles
(option to knit leaves on 3 double-ended needles)
and sewn together

rose is a long piece that is rolled up

stem is a very narrow piece sewn at one side
(or a perfect opportunity to use that i-cord knitting mill!)

leaves are double sided and have a choice of 2 versions :-
simple : knit two flat and sew together
neater: knit both sides at once (back to back)

use a coat-hanger to wire the rose stem

if you're happy with a floppy rose
(suitable as a toy or don't want a stem)

roll the flower up as in photos sewing it in place
let the top edge roll over
allow it to slightly over-lap at the base
sew into place
sew  the side of the stem (stuff slightly as you go)
add leaves
sew the top of the stem to the rose

 or

add pipe-cleaners to stem and leaves

or

if you want it to sit in a vase : it needs wiring
( not a toy for a small child )

adding wire

prepare wire, pad wire,
attach rose, attach leaves
sew stem around

take a thin coat-hanger
( a cheap one from the dry cleaner's is perfect )

cut a flat piece with two curved ends

use the round nose pliers to bend the ends into loops

and wrap with tape
so there are no sharp edges

tie wool (tights) onto one loop
and wrap around wire to other end
tie off
repeat so the wire is well padded (check it doesn't get too big)

fold one side of rose around top of wire
sew into place

roll the flower up as in photos sewing it in place
let the top edge roll over
allow it to slightly over-lap at the base
sew into place

wrap wide end of stem around rose
and sew into place

tie pipe cleaner around wire about half way up
add 2nd pipe cleaner for side leaves
push leaves onto ends and sew into place

cover wire with stem
sew sides of stem around wire
