not a christmas jumper
knitted tree appliqué craft project
up-cycle for christmas
you will need :-
a jumper (knitted, needs to be a loose fit because of the lights)
(one you knitted earlier/back of the wardrobe/ charity shop?)
100g green dk (double knitting) wool (i used acrylic )
a pair of 4mm knitting needles (8uk 6us)
tapestry needle (for assembly)
tinsel 1m - 2m
other tree decorations bawbles / bells / star / fairy? the more the better
cotton and sewing needle to attach decorations
string(s) of battery powered led fairy lights (don’t forget the batteries)
snowflake/star covers are great BUT you need to be able to take the top off
in-line leds are ok, but will need sewing into place and won’t need the holes
X-large
knitting needle (10mm) or a pencil, to poke holes through for the
lights
(to stretch the stitches to allow the light through, rather than cutting a hole)
abbreviations:- k knit p purl s slip k2tog knit 2 stitches together ssk knit 2 stitches together through the back loop p2tog purl 2 stitches together ssp slip 2 stitches knit-wise onto right needle, slip back to left needle, purl through back loop psso pass the slipped stitch over short rows (using w&t) turning the work half way along the row to add shaping w&t wrap and turn : slip next stitch without knitting, pass wool to other side, (back to front for knit / front to back for purl) slip stitch back to left needle, turn work and continue kwraps : pick up and knit the wraps as you come to them pwraps : pick up and purl the wraps as you come to them 1 first knit your tree
measure your jumper choose the best size
1 large tree is 20” x 20”
2 medium is 17” wide x 19” tall
3 small is 12” wide x 13” tall
2 sew tree onto jumper position it : make sure it’s level, and leave room at the top for a star/fairy
use safety pins to pin points into place (i used sock needles) stitch round the edges using tapestry needle and wool use big stitches at the back to make it easy to remove if you want the jumper back NOTE : DO NOT SEW FRONT OF JUMPER TO BACK OF JUMPER ! 3 add tinsel either cut it to fit, or pass the ends behind the knitted tree sew into place : using cotton and a sewing needle safety pins are another option ( i added the lights first : a mistake ) 4 add lights mark out positions of the lights before you start
check there is enough length of wire between the lights, and don’t pull tight start near the bottom so the battery holder can fit into your pocket
using X-large needle make a hole through jumper and knitted tree 
push snowflake/star (led cap) into the hole (front to back)
push the led in from the back of the jumper
continue for each of the lights 
if using two strings of lights start one on each side at the hem, and work up if using small in-line leds, sew them onto the front of the jumper by making loops over the wire with a needle and cotton 5 add decorations raid the christmas tree box add bawbles, bells and stars
you can never have too many decorations on a christmas jumper
BEWARE: CHOCOLATE DECORATIONS (the tinsel and lights won’t wash) and the NHS are very busy this year so :-
shut your eyes (and take off your glasses) when pulling over your headno choking hazards for childrenand watch out for spiky decorations. merry christmas!
