knit a 3-D shape
buckminster fullerene : molecule of Carbon 60 (chemistry)
bucky-ball : truncated icosahedron (mathematics)
soccer football for the world cup

twenty 6-sided hexagons (white)
twelve 5-sided pentagons (red)

bucky ball net

materials
set of 4 double ended sock needles size 3.75mm (uk9 us5)
100g white wool double knitting
50g  red wool double knitting
needle to sew up
balloon / or stuffing

size
finished ball measures 7"-8" (18-20 cm) across & 23"-25" (59-64cm) round
(depending on how hard you stuff it!)

each (red) pentagon is 2.5" high (6cm) & 2.5" at widest point

each (white) hexagon is 3"(7.5cm) high & 2.5"(6cm) across

(easy to make the ball bigger : add extra rounds to each shape )

32 separate shapes
each knitted out from the centre
on 4 double-ended sock needles
sewn together

6-sided shapes have equal number of stitches on each needle
continue until 18 stitches on each needle

5-sided shapes have half as many stitches on one of the needles
(10 stitches : 4 on 1st needle, 2 on 2nd needle, 4 on 3rd)
continue until 18 stitches on 2 needles
and 9 stitches on other needle

a rose for Shanti, england and st george('s day)

decided to improve on the original (may have over-done it?)
(original is now called "long stem rose (rose for shanti version 1)")
by knitting 6 petals separately and adding to the outside of the rose
sewing to the (green) top of stem
(this will work as a flower without a stem, simply sewing up the base)
have also improved the leaf by adding extra leaf-lets

materials
rose
150g red double knitting wool
50g green double knitting wool
size 4mm (uk8/us6) knitting needles
darning/tapestry needle to sew up

pipe cleaners for stem and leaves

for fully wired stem (optional)
wire coat-hanger / similar thickness wire
pliers, wire-cutters, tape

can all be knitted flat on 2 needles
(option to knit leaves on 3 double-ended needles)
and sewn together

rose centre is a long piece that is rolled up
petals are knitted flat
with short row shaping at the beginning
and gradually decreasing to base
each petal is slightly larger than the one before

stem is a very narrow piece sewn at one side
(or a perfect opportunity to use that i-cord knitting mill!)

leaves are double sided and have a choice of 2 versions :-
simple : knit two flat and sew together
neater: knit both sides at once (back to back)

use a coat-hanger to wire the rose stem to allow it to sit in a vase
